When retired Military Police officer Hank receives a message telling him his army enlisted boy is missing from his New Mexico base and when his request for answers reveals nothing the old man, helped by an initially reluctant female detective, sets out on a detection path of his own. "In The Valley Of Elah" is a clever, nicely photographed film that ultimately makes its stance on the dehumanisation that results from violent conflict (Iraq). A Hollywood dramatic thriller yes, overly signposted ye find out more...

Ming is a sergeant in the Hong Kong police force, but his true colours lie with his Triad boss; Yan works for the same Triad boss but his real loyalties are with the police. Both men have spent years leading the same furtive and often fraught existence but for opposing sides, and it is only when a drugs bust goes spectacularly wrong that the two moles become aware of the other's existence, though not their identity. Infernal Affairs is a hard boiled character driven thriller that concentrates he find out more...

This second part of the Infernal Affairs trilogy is set ten years prior to the showdown witnessed in the first film. Here we find Yan and Ming at the very beginning of their careers, one a young police officer undercover with the triads, the other a triad infiltrating the cops. Infernal Affairs II is every bit as slick as the first, an intelligent action thriller that fleshes out the central characters' motivations and, in a pleasantly frustrating way, makes a second watching of Part One unavoid find out more...

Superbly stylish thriller played out amongst the seedy Paris underworld. A pimp is forced to turn informer when the flics put the hard word on the hooker he adores. Car chases and bar room brawls abound, but it's the painfully real emotions which make this tale of love and betrayal truly outstanding. find out more...

Stunning adaptation of James Ellroy's stylishly sinister 50s crime novel, cruelly robbed of its just desserts by a sinking ship at the Academy Awards farce. An awesomely authentic 1953 Los Angeles provides the backdrop, while the story focuses on a dodgy trio of LA's not-so-finest, united by mutual loathing, and all up to their necks in nefarious goings-on. Kim Basinger deservedly bagged the Best Supporting Actress Oscar for her sultry Veronica Lake lookalike hooker, but all the performances are find out more...

Tense and engaging account of contemporary Parisian street life. The recriminations against the notorious police for an injured friend are realised by a documentary style of film making with voyeuristic undertones. Violently realistic and bitter drama. Excellent soundtrack. find out more...

Life On Mars is the smash-hit cop show starring John Simm as a detective who is involved in a car accident and wakes to find himself transported back to 1973 – a world dominated by Ford Cortinas, sheep-skin jackets, flares, silly haircuts, glam rock and very hard coppers. In his altered state of reality Sam must prove himself to his 'new boss', the hot-headed DCI Gene Hunt, all the while unsure whether he is awake or dreaming. In Episode 1 he hunts a serial killer and in Episode 2 he attempts to find out more...

Episode 3 is one of the weaker sketchs with a rather silly plot about a scab in a textiles factory getting killed. However Episode 4 is much stronger with corruption in the police force the core of the story. Which way will old-style police thug DCI Hunt swing, will he back up Simm or continue on the take? The series is now beginning to motor, the dialogue in this script is some of the smartest and the series is doing what it does at its best, parodying both 70s cop shows and the 70s themselves. find out more...
