Review
The ancient family of Groan has been incarcerated for centuries in the vast, crumbling castle of Gormenghast. The charismatic Steerpike, who escapes from his destiny as a kitchen boy, threatens the dynasty. Steerpike charms and outwits the eccentric inhabitants of the castle, including the beautiful Fuchsia, and soon only Titus stands in his way. Against the backdrop of the fabulous decaying castle the young Earl and the charming pretender fight a bloody battle of wits. Who will emerge the victor and what secrets will be discovered? Written by Mervyn Peake, this is a well-made, well-acted, and enjoyable TV drama by the folks at the Beeb. If one were any offer any criticism it would be to say that it is a little too slick, and tries to be a little too hip for its own good! This is not to say that a finely crafted film is a bad thing, but sometimes too much polish can obscure the guts of the thing - enjoyable nonetheless!
