This animated film from Bristol's Bolexbrothers studio impresses for its interwoven techniques (mainly claymation and pixilated live action) and its nightmare vision. Born to a poor, boorish couple after an accident at an artificial insemination plant, little Tom is soon abducted by government heavies and subjected to torturous experiments. With the help of a mutant, he escapes from the lab into a cruel, filthy world where desperate little people wage an unending war of survival against the ordinary 'giants'. Dave Borthwick, the writer, editor and director, has the knack of making everyday things seem peculiarly strange and sinister. A dark often sinister multi-award winning slant on the Victorian fairytale.
