Tom and Gerri are a couple tapping reluctantly on the door of their sixties; he's a geologist and she's a psychotherapist, their son Joe an unanchored activist lawyer. When Gerri attempts to set up her lonely friend Mary she is horrified when her friend instead flirts with her son, an event that unravels the protagonists’ story. Mike Leigh is on familiar territory with this comedy drama based on the lives of everyday people, and when I say ‘comedy’ I mean ‘bitter sweet’ and when I say ‘drama’ I mean ‘Tragedy’.
