From the same director-brothers who made Gimme Shelter comes this poignant character study of the Bouvier Beales. It's a film that owes much to Frederick Wiseman's style of unobtrusive observation; the brothers' patiently let the camera roll giving the scenes to breathe and flourish. The interplay between the two women is the real draw here, punctuated by performances for the benefit of the film makers, rich in quotable insights. It's appeal is such that it has spawned a hit broadway show as well as an HBO series. It's an odd, sometimes unsettling film but Edith and 'Little Edie' are never less than captivating and it remains a masterpiece of its kind.
