With the death of the king, Shrek is the next in line to the throne of Far Far Away, not a nice idea for an ogre still gagging to get back to his beautiful quiet swamp. To this end Shrek and his faithful buddies set off to find the rightful heir to the crown, which turns out to be a rather geeky young Arthur. Still funny, still touching, but there is no escaping the feeling that Shrek has run its course, with the numerous adult references and imaginative re-interpretation of fairytales from old having become a necessary plot device rather than a source of inspiration, though, while it lacks the easy genius of the first two films, there is still much to enjoy.
