Lily is a pretty young Londoner living at the height of the blitz, Charlie is a young Canadian soldier posted in Britain and on the way to the front line; they meet, they fall in love, they marry, he gets shipped off. Finding herself alone and now pregnant Lily lives in fear that she will never see her husband again, so when she receives instructions to go and live with Charlie's family in Canada, she accepts. Now trapped on a run down farm, surrounded by a hostile family-in-law, and in the middle of the Canadian wilderness, Lily's decision would seem to have been unwise, but War Bride is a story about hope and humour in the face of adversity, not resignation and tragedy.
