Review
The third instalment of the sororal werewolf saga sees the sisters Ginger and Bridgette wandering the woodlands of 19th century Canada. After a close encounter with a steel animal trap and a prophetic native crone, our heroines hole up in a nearby army outpost populated with the usual ragtag group of misogynistic soldiers and barking mad men of God. However, things get a bit hairy (geddit?) when the outpost is attacked by marauding lycanthropes and the girls have to protect themselves from both the bushy tailed anarchists and the men looking to sever the bond between the sisters. Most of the reasons why the original Ginger Snaps stood head and shoulders above recent horror offerings are sadly lacking in this ‘prequel', the 19th century setting, while beautifully filmed and atmospheric, seems somewhat redundant and incongruous to much of the dialogue. The humour of the first film is also conspicuous in its absence, but at least the sisters are together in the flesh again (after the plot of the first film saw Ginger reduced to a ghost for the sequel). Despite these criticisms, Ginger Snaps Back is still better than many recent horror movies, but if you're looking for a bit of class rent the first film instead.
