BRIEF ENCOUNTER (HOWARD/JOHNSON) (1945)
CertificationPG Our Rating
This movie shocked audiences back when it was first released, a sympathetic portrayal of two strangers who meet in a train station and have a non-consumated extramarital affair, was too strong for the times. Written by the equally shocking Noel Coward, this is a classic British melodrama.

CASABLANCA (1942)
CertificationPG Our Rating
Nothing more can be said about this classic melodrama from the peak of the Hollywood studio-film era. Hardened cynic Bogart softens when he meets old flame Bergman who is now a refugee in neutral wartime Casablanca. Together they outwit the Germans... and of course there's that famous song. Watch this classic or some day you'll regret it. Maybe not today, maybe not tomorrow...

KING KONG THE DIRECTOR'S CUT (1933)
CertificationPG Our Rating
This is the director's cut of the 1933 classic. It contains several scenes that were originally excised and is taken from a restored archive print. Kong looks as terrifying as ever and there is also a half-hour documentary of celebrating the 60th anniversary of the making of King Kong. Excellent stuff.

NORTH BY NORTHWEST (1959)
CertificationPG Our Rating
Undoubtedly one of Hitch's best. An innocent businessman is mistaken for a spy by enemy agents and learns the true meaning of persecution, while a deceptively beautiful blonde in the pay of his tormentors steals his heart. A tense and compulsively gripping nice-guy's nightmare. Obligatory viewing.

ON THE WATERFRONT (1954)
CertificationPG Our Rating
Winner of 8 Oscars, this is the story of a misfit who challenges the power of the tough New York Longshoremen's Union. Steiger plays his brother, caught between divided loyalties, and Eve Marie Saint plays the woman he falls in love with. Highly recommended viewing despite its political premises. NB the special pleading on behalf of informers, deriving presumably from the fact that Kazan and Schulberg named names during the McCarthy witch-hunts.
