Possibly Allen's best picture, this won 4 Oscars when it was released and follows the "nervous" romance of Alvy, a comedian, and Annie, a singer. Reputedly based on Allen and Keaton's real-life romantic-comedy it is a satire of social mores from LA to California, and discusses a bit of life, the universe, et al. find out more...

The greatest movie ever made? A soldier is sent into the Heart of Darkness to retrieve a commander gone AWOL in an insane reality of tin-pot power, paranoia and inglorious killing. The horror of war is stripped naked in a surreal twilight world. The crew nearly went mad making it, Martin Sheen suffered a heart attack and Coppola flew so far beyond budget that the word 'bankrupt' was nearly redefined. See "Heart of Darkness"... find out more...

Polanski has a go at the film noir detective thriller, very bleak, very twisted and very menacing it is to. Nicholson plays a private-eye in pre-war LA who is hired to pursue an adultery case, but finds himself embroiled in a complicated murder investigation. find out more...

Visually stunning, beautifully performed and with the most breathtaking martial arts fight sequences yet to be committed to celluloid. find out more...
FARGO (1996)

An excellent black comedy, handsome thriller and a tall story that keeps you guessing as it unwinds. The genuinely ridiculous plot (a man pays a couple of goons to 'pretend' to kidnap his wife in order to get his paws on his in-laws' 'ransom' money) is completely credible as mighty plans fall apart, spiralling ever more beyond the protagonist's control and leaving us marvelling at the complex stupidity of human nature. A modern classic.

GANDHI (1982)

The object of this massive tribute died as he had always lived, without wealth, without property, without official title or office. Mahatma Gandhi was not the commander of armies, nor the ruler of vast lands, he could not boast any scientific achievement or artistic gift, yet men, governments, dignitaries from all over the world, have joined hands today to pay homage to the little brown man in the loin cloth who led his country to freedom. This quote is from his funeral, one of the greatest s find out more...

Another superlative cinematic tour de force from the Coen brothers. A Vietnam Vet stumbles across the bloody remnants of a shoot out, pockets some booty and disappears pursued by Javier Bardem's relentless, dead eyed assassin. An ageing, disillusioned sheriff, the excellent Tommy Lee Jones, whose small town rural values have been eroded by the inexorable rise in brutal drug-crime related violence is the reluctant, but dogged, cop in pursuit of both hitman and thief. What follows is a battle of w find out more...
