Controversial (on release) for using words such as 'semen' and 'panties' in order to aid its realism, and perhaps for it's very ambivalent position on the role of the law in achieving justice. Stewart plays a lawyer hired to defend Gazzara from the charge of murdering the man who allegedly raped his wife. Stylish, cool and brilliant!

ANNIE HALL (1977)

Possibly Allen's best picture, this won 4 Oscars when it was released and follows the "nervous" romance of Alvy, a comedian, and Annie, a singer. Reputedly based on Allen and Keaton's real-life romantic-comedy it is a satire of social mores from LA to California, and discusses a bit of life, the universe, et al.

APOCALYPSE NOW (1979)
Certification18 Our Rating
The greatest movie ever made? A soldier is sent into the Heart of Darkness to retrieve a commander gone AWOL in an insane reality of tin-pot power, paranoia and inglorious killing. The horror of war is stripped naked in a surreal twilight world. The crew nearly went mad making it, Martin Sheen suffered a heart attack and Coppola flew so far beyond budget that the word 'bankrupt' was nearly redefined. See "Heart of Darkness"...

APOCALYPSE NOW REDUX (1979)
Certification18 Our Rating
The definitive 'Apocalypse Now' (as if the original wasn't pretty definitive) this has nearly an hour of extra footage fleshing out the surreal journey of our central protagonists and, though it brings the film to a whisker short of three and a half hours, much of it explains what happens to the eclectic characters we meet. The cut version of 'Apocalypse Now' stands as one of the most awesome films of modern cinema, anyone who has seen it will inevitably see it again, it's just that now you have

BEFORE SUNSET (2004)

When Jesse and Celine met ten years ago, it was a fleeting moment of connection, a relationship that lasted little more than a few hours yet changed their lives forever. Back in Paris to promote the book he has written about their time together Jesse meets with Celine once again, an opportunity to put right the decision that they made before perhaps. Before Sunset is the long awaited, indeed unexpected, sequel to Before Sunrise; to many a perceptive , thoughtful, and often witty, meditation on t

BICYCLE THIEVES (1948)

Perhaps the most influential period in cinema history was the Italian neo-realism period of the late 40s and director Vittorio De Sica was one of the prime reasons for this important period of film-making. "The Bicycle Thieves" is a film about a poor man whose only means for a job is his bicycle, which gets stolen. The film follows him and his young boy throughout war-ravaged Rome in search of the stolen bike. The trip involves some of the most brilliant vignettes in film history; the church, th

BIG FISH (2003)

Will's dad, Edward Bloom, is the teller of the most fantastical flights of fancy, and everyone loves him for it, except Will, whose had to live with the emotionally absent man rather than the imaginative adventurer. Tim Burton's latest film is a visually ravishing return to form, a place of witches and giants, beauty and wonder, and though Ewan Mcgregor is no Johnny Depp, hell……it could have been worse....think Planet of The Apes for god's sake!

BLADE RUNNER (DIRECTOR'S CUT) (1982)

A stunning visual account of man's struggle for survival in the 21st Century, a time when replicant life forms are beginning to surpass humans not just in intelligence but emotions, raising questions about our concepts of self. A post-modern sci-fi classic, THE great Hollywood movie of the '80s, the last great pre-computer film done with smoke-and-mirrors SFX and the definitive cult arthouse Sci-Fi film. This is the second version re-edited by Ridley Scott; all the good bits remain, with the onl
