AMORES PERROS (2000)
Certification18 Our Rating
This fast-paced and beautifully constructed film debut by Mexican director Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu has won critical acclaim all over the world. Weaving the stories of the three victims of a brutal car crash which we witness in the first scene, the film takes you through three very separate worlds that all come together on Mexico's mean streets. From the world of a high-class supermodel to the depths of despair felt by an exiled ex-assassin, Amores Perros is a real achievement in filmmaking.

BRING ME THE HEAD OF ALFREDO GARCIA (1974)
Certification18 Our Rating
A penniless pianist learns that contract-killing target Alfredo Garcia is already dead and sets out to recover his head and claim the bounty. Perhaps Peckinpah's most complex and critically controversial film, an eclectic mix of existensial quest, gothic tale, political critique of American involvement in Latin America and a love story of two losers challenging destiny. Set in Mexico.

CLOCKWORK ORANGE (1971)
Certification18 Our Rating
Based on Anthony Burgess's novel, Clockwork Orange is a profoundly disturbing movie focusing on the mind-numbing amorality and brutality of gang-leader Alex and the even darker machinations of a government that wants to control him. Striking, masterful, seriously in your face, Clockwork Orange is deservedly up there with some of Kubrick's best work.

EL TOPO (1971)
Certification18 Our Rating
The highly eccentric and totally brilliant Alexandro Jodorowsky doesn't make films like anybody else. Directed, written by and starring the man himself "El Topo" is a violent, surreal, quasi-religious Western, if that makes sense (which like the film it doesn't). AJ plays the nomadic lone gunslinger of the title, mostly shooting people for the first half, before being reincarnated as the comedian-cum-holyman protector of a community of deformed outcasts. No doubt some would attempt to read all s

ELEPHANT (2003)
Certification15 Our Rating
Gus Van Sant's take on the shooting at Columbine High School is a masterpiece. Using a cast of unprofessional actors, he has created a unique and highly affecting film, rich in atmosphere and style. The non-linear narrative follows the experiences of the key characters, giving a different perspective of events in the short time frame (most of the events shown in the film take place in about an hour). While the tension in the film obviously comes from the impending violence, the film's strongest

FIGHT CLUB (1999)

Hard-hitting yet darkly humourous dissection of the male psyche, from the director of "Se7en" and "The Game". Ed Norton is the Narrator, a socially inadequate white collar worker who frequents self-help groups for the terminally ill, despite being fit as a fiddle. After this particular avenue of pleasure is denied him, he meets Tyler Durden (Brad Pitt), who believes the point of life is to explore self-destruction and experience the pleasures of violence.

HENRY PORTRAIT OF A SERIAL KILLER (1992)
Certification18 Our Rating
A grim and harrowing account of the daily life of a serial killer. If you can stomach the violence, it is well worth watching. The main criticism is that things are seen only from one point of view, which can be limiting. Now available uncut.

IRREVERSIBLE (2002)
Certification18 Our Rating
Playing against time, like Memento, this is a gut wrenching exploration of an horrific act of indiscriminate brutality and the vicious revenge that is its consequence. Irreversible is an exceptionally powerful movie and one of the most disturbing pieces of cinema I've ever seen (the tortuously protracted rape scene would have Ghandi screaming for the death penalty). Awesome....but you have been warned.
