You've seen the trailer, and then you probably saw it again and then a year went by and you saw it again, but where was the film? At last the most trailered film in history, and wonderfully nasty it is too. Keitel is cop, junkie, thief gambler and hustler not looking for, but finding God. Great.

Years of police work have taught Detective Finlay that where there's crime there's motive. Stunning adaptation of James Ellroy's stylishly sinister 50s crime novel, cruelly robbed of its just desserts by a sinking ship at the Academy Awards farce. An awesomely authentic 1953 Los Angeles provides the backdrop, while the story focuses on a dodgy trio of LA's not-so-finest, united by mutual loathing, and all up to their necks in nefarious goings-on. Kim Basinger deservedly bagged the Best Supporting Actress Oscar for her sultry Veronica Lake lookalike hooker, but all the performances are

Tense and engaging account of contemporary Parisian street life. The recriminations against the notorious police for an injured friend are realised by a documentary style of film making with voyeuristic undertones. Violently realistic and bitter drama. Excellent soundtrack.
