It all really kicks off in Jackson's adaptation of Tolkien's second book; Frodo and Samwise team up with Gollum in their continuing quest, Aragorn's posse prepare for a last stand at Helmsdeep, the Ents get energised and a mighty new white wizard emerges from the forests. Father's news of his transfer to the wild and heady world of New York in 1903 has love-struck teenager Garland upset, as this will mean a forced seperation from her loved-one. So much for plot, but who cares, from the Technicolor cinematography and set decoration to the costumes and musical score, this one is a winner. A fine cast plays in flawless ensemble fashion, the songs are a sheer delight, every one a classic, and Garland never looked better. A screen musical gem, lovely.

Excellent, imaginative documentary set in a beautiful summer meadow. Thankfully forsaking the dreary commentary so often associated with natural history, filmmakers Nurisdany and Perennou instead rely on music and the wonderfully expressive sounds of the birds and insects themselves. Every detail of the meadow's inhabitants' activities is startlingly and vibrantly captured through a magnified lense, transforming the mundane into the magnificent. Fascinating.

Captain Jack Sparrow has lost nearly everything; his treasure, his beloved boat, even his treacherous crew. What Jack hasn't lost however is his roguish charm, envious self-belief and a single minded determination that what was once his will become his again. 'Pirates of the Caribbean' also has true love, much righteous daring do and a ship full of the undead, but this high seas romp is made by Johnny Depp's hilariously roguish pirate; a comic tour de force and a rip-roaring adventure to boot.

An archetypal classic Western, since remade countless times, with Alan Ladd superb as the world-weary gunslinger who rides into town and finds himself as the 'good guy' protecting the innocent from powerful malevolent forces. Shrek is an Ogre who lives in contented anonymity in his swamp, but the threat of losing his home forces the reluctant beast to set off an adventure to rescue a tougher than old boots damsel in distress, closely followed by a particularly gobby donkey. Shrek effectively carries on the fine tradition began by 'Toy Story', stunning computer animation tied to a story that's apparently for kids but which has a script that's knowing, witty, loaded with in-jokes and squarely aimed at the adults. Tobey Maguire is up there with Michael Keaton as the perfect casting choice for a super hero, diminutive and unassuming in their day wear, but utterly convincing once they donned the kitsch lycra.
