The most compelling Batman yet - no longer the dithering idiot of the sixties but a merciless superhero seeking vengeance. Jack Nicholson steals the show, though, with a superbly over the top Joker (the casting department really worked overtime on that one...), and they battle it out amongst a frenzy of special effects. Highly enjoyable, don't miss it.

Phyllis Dietrichson is trapped in a loveless marriage to a man who inspires in her nothing but contempt, but rather than leave him Phyllis decides to kill him and collect on the insurance policy she's had set up with the help of her lover, and naive partner in crime, insurance salesman Walter Neff. They're around us, everywhere - on TV, in the supermarkets, running corporations, marshalling the army, sitting in government and even starring in movies. They have bug eyes, extending limbs, weird hairdos, webbed feet, several heads and they come in many different varieties, it's just you don't remember much about them 'coz of those snappily dressed Men In Black with their super-dooper weaponry like memory erasers. Tobey Maguire is up there with Michael Keaton as the perfect casting choice for a super hero, diminutive and unassuming in their day wear, but utterly convincing once they donned the kitsch lycra. After a mutant spider bites Peter Parker he suddenly gains the most incredible powers. At first Peter uses these gifts for his own benefit but after tragedy strikes he resolves himself to fighting evil (in particular the rather wasted talents of Dafoe as the Green Goblin) and defending the good people find out more...

X MEN (2000)

Certification12 Our Rating

Taken from the Marvel comic characters this huge budgeted live action extravaganza focuses on the formulation of the X-Men; a group of young earth mutants with extraordinary powers who are moulded into a force for good by professor Xavier and their first life and death battle, to protect a world that fears them, against a psychotic fellow mutant, Magneto. 'X-Men' as you might expect has impressive special effects; ridiculous certainly, but if that's an issue, you've completely missed the point. find out more...
