Woody plays Isaac Davies, a man with a social conscience and a tangled love life; his wife has recently left him for another woman, his new girlfriend is only seventeen, and he's in love with the mistress of his best friend. A bittersweet social comedy framed as a loving tribute to neurotic New York, overlaid with an evocative Gershwin score, it's funny and sad in exactly the right proportions. Allen could well strive vainly ever to better this film. Filmed in black and white.
