Stallone is more stocky than Rocky in this brooding corruption drama, playing Freddy Heflin, the half-witted sheriff of a quiet New Jersey suburb that's been all but taken over by bent cops. Heflin either doesn't notice or doesn't care about their small-time crooked capers, until one of Manhattan's not-so-finest, Murray Babitch, shoots dead a couple of black motorists. Intense thriller with Fishburne as the undercover cop trying to bring down the big boys and Goldblum excellent as Fishburne's lawyer-turned-dealer partner. As Fishburne realises what a political pawn he has become, he has to re-examine his past to establish his motives. Utterly absorbing filmmaking with a hip hop soundtrack to match.
