CHAOS (2005)

Certification15 Our Rating

With Chaos, Hideo Nakata proves that as well as scaring the heebie-jeebies out of his audiences with horror classics like 'Ring' and 'Dark Water' he can also carry his own with the best psychological thrillers. A woman hires a local handyman to kidnap her and leave her tied up in a friend's apartment. When he returns from collecting the ransom the woman is dead and a sinister phone call tells him to dump the body or risk capture by the police. Hitchcockian in both tone and content, Chaos twists find out more...

Phyllis Dietrichson is trapped in a loveless marriage to a man who inspires in her nothing but contempt, but rather than leave him Phyllis decides to kill him and collect on the insurance policy she's had set up with the help of her lover, and naive partner in crime, insurance salesman Walter Neff. The only flaws in their plan are the company's reluctance to pay out so much, the diligence of Neff's increasingly suspicious colleague, (and his 'little man'), and the exemplary ruthlessness of Ph find out more...

Stunningly filmed in black and white, this classic slice of surrealist cinema is both touching and terrifying. A doctor, tortured beyond sanity after disfiguring his only daughter, sets out to give her back what he has taken away, at the expense of a succession of suitable young donors. A darkly disturbing marvellous movie. find out more...
FARGO (1996)

Certification18 Our Rating

An excellent black comedy, handsome thriller and a tall story that keeps you guessing as it unwinds. The genuinely ridiculous plot (a man pays a couple of goons to 'pretend' to kidnap his wife in order to get his paws on his in-laws' 'ransom' money) is completely credible as mighty plans fall apart, spiralling ever more beyond the protagonist's control and leaving us marvelling at the complex stupidity of human nature. A modern classic.

FRAILTY (2001)

Certification15 Our Rating

A small backwater of Texas finds its self at the mercy of a serial killer that they thought had long ago disappeared. When Fenton Meiks turns up at the FBI's door to tell them without doubt who the killer is (or indeed are) he also gives a chilling account of his family's history and the reasons behind the killings of the past and those of the present. Frailty is a tight unnerving psychological horror, creepy and unredemptive. find out more...

Mayhem-filled road movie from the director of "Accion Mutante" and "Day of the Beast". Perdita Durango (Rosie Perez) likes to live life on the edge, and that's putting it mildly. Together with her psychic drug-dealer lover Romeo, kidnapping, frenzied sex and demonic rituals are all in a day's work for the brunette bombshell. When they're hired by the Mafia to do a "delivery", there's no stopping this crazy couple in their quest to become the most over-the-top outlaws in Mexico. Completely nuts. find out more...

A masterful adaptation of David Peace's Ellroy-esque noir trilogy. In '1974', the first chapter, a rookie journalist looks to solve the increasingly vexing case of a serial killer on the loose. A bleak vision of corruption in an emphatically isolated 'North', which raises the game for levels of darkness in TV drama. Andrew Garfield gives a captivating performance as the idealistic journalist in way over his head. Highly recommended. find out more...

The trilogy continues and life in West Riding becomes grimmer. Police corruption interferes with the search for a killer in Yorkshire, England. This time, Paddy Considine's Mancunian copper-with-a-heart-of-gold is brought in to head the inquiry into the unsolved murders. Like the journo before him, he finds resistance wherever he turns. Gripping stuff, based on David Peace's novel "Nineteen Eighty" find out more...
