IN A LONELY PLACE (1950)

Brilliantly directed story about a psychotic Hollywood scriptwriter, who is suspected of murder but given a false alibi by his gorgeous neighbour. As the police close in, it develops into a beautifully tense psychological thriller, did he do it and will the girl stand by her man? Awesome, awesome, awesome!!!

Lacombe is a young French peasant who wants to join the resistance but is considered too young, so instead he joins the Gestapo! He enjoys his power but soon falls in love with a Jewish girl. This can be seen as Malle's answer to the question who colloborates? The film maps the mechanics of compromise with precision and without histronics. Another superb film from the great French director.

This ambitious and addictive BBC drama, tracing thirty years in the lives of four working class friends from Newcastle starting in 1964, is at least as good as any of the current much lauded series emanating from the US. Mary's mistake, Nicky's idealism, Geordie's escape to London and Tosker's ambition are played out against a backdrop of social change, police corruption and swinging times.
