MORVERN CALLAR (2002)
Certification15 Our Rating
Morvern Callar is a young Scottish lass with an attitude to life that provides it with few demands, but when she finds her boyfriend dead on the floor one morning and the manuscript to his just finished book not far away, it would seem life (and her dead beau) is offering her the opportunity to blag herself a future. Made almost contemporaneously with the 1930s setting, this authentically portrays the poverty and repression of the migrant 'Okies', evicted from their dustbowl farms and treated like slaves in California. Adapted from Steinbeck's book, often called 'THE Great American Novel' and with outstanding performances coming from Henry Fonda (Tom Joad) and John Carradine (John Casey) a preacher with a fondess for vice, but a true heart... fantastic.

THE SURE THING (1985)

Reiner's splendidly confident, witty teenage variation on 'It Happened One Night' focuses on two students hitching across the States through rainstorms, starvation and show tunes. He's a libidinous layabout, who inadvertently dropped in to college, and she's an uptight goody-goody who believes spontaneity has its time and its place. There's plenty of mileage in this pairing, even if the movie isn't going anywhere unexpected. It now looks like a dry run for 'When Harry Met Sally' and some of the
