Intersplicing clips of all those old heroes, like Bogart, Ladd, Stanwyck, Milland, Lancaster, Laughton, Cagney, with comic clips of Steve Martin as a keen, but clumsy detective who gets all the good lines, creates both an extremely funny comedy and a whodunnit in the best possible taste. find out more...

Life On Mars is the smash-hit cop show starring John Simm as a detective who is involved in a car accident and wakes to find himself transported back to 1973 – a world dominated by Ford Cortinas, sheep-skin jackets, flares, silly haircuts, glam rock and very hard coppers. In his altered state of reality Sam must prove himself to his 'new boss', the hot-headed DCI Gene Hunt, all the while unsure whether he is awake or dreaming. Episode 3 is one of the weaker sketchs with a rather silly plot about a scab in a textiles factory getting killed. A retired legal counsellor writes a novel hoping to find closure for one of his past unresolved homicide cases and for his unreciprocated love with his superior, both of which still haunt him decades later. The central performance by Ricardo Darin is a highlight of the film, counterbalancing its dark plot of catharsis and revenge with a beguiling warmth and humanity.
Winner of the 2010 Oscar for Best Foreign Film, beating stiff, and arguably superior, competition from Haneke’s ‘The White R find out more...
