COP LAND (1997)

Stallone is more stocky than Rocky in this brooding corruption drama, playing Freddy Heflin, the half-witted sheriff of a quiet New Jersey suburb that's been all but taken over by bent cops. Heflin either doesn't notice or doesn't care about their small-time crooked capers, until one of Manhattan's not-so-finest, Murray Babitch, shoots dead a couple of black motorists. In a gob-smacking display of arrogance, Babitch fakes his own death and "hides out" in Cop Land, right under Heflin's nose. B find out more...

Intense thriller with Fishburne as the undercover cop trying to bring down the big boys and Goldblum excellent as Fishburne's lawyer-turned-dealer partner. Stylish chiller thriller with Denzel Washington as homicide detective John Hobbes, who gets the heebie-jeebies at a spate of murders bearing all the trademarks of serial killer Edgar Reese - because Hobbes himself watched Reese put to death in the gas chamber. Forced to confront facts which go against everything the hardened cop knows to be true, Hobbes finds himself on the trail of an unseen entity which can take over anyone it fancies. Darkly X-Files-ish.

Brilliantly directed story about a psychotic Hollywood scriptwriter, who is suspected of murder but given a false alibi by his gorgeous neighbour. As the police close in, it develops into a beautifully tense psychological thriller, did he do it and will the girl stand by her man? Awesome, awesome, awesome!!! find out more...

Riveting stuff from Clint as the aging Fed desperate to prove he's not over the hill, and that JFK's death wasn't his fault! John Malkovich is superb as the laconic and devious killer out to get both the president and Clint in one go. Cliches aside, tight direction keeps up maximum pace. find out more...

When retired Military Police officer Hank receives a message telling him his army enlisted boy is missing from his New Mexico base and when his request for answers reveals nothing the old man, helped by an initially reluctant female detective, sets out on a detection path of his own. "In The Valley Of Elah" is a clever, nicely photographed film that ultimately makes its stance on the dehumanisation that results from violent conflict (Iraq). A Hollywood dramatic thriller yes, overly signposted ye find out more...

The inimitable Sellers in the second of the Pink Panther farces. Although the overall standard is high, it would be worth watching just to see Clouseau impersonating a dentist with a wax nose, or to see him get the girl in the end without even taking his socks off. find out more...
SERPICO (1974)

Certification18 Our Rating

Pacino is superb as the oddball cop Frank Serpico, an idealist cop who stood out not just because of his odd dress sense, but because of his refusal to take bribes, something which made him very dangerous to his thieving corrupt workmates. A series of narrative twists make this excellent truth-based drama gripping viewing. A forerunner for the even better 'Prince of the City'. find out more...
