"Angelopoulos’ sixth film, the Golden Lion award winning Alexander The Great (O Megalexandros, 1980), is a perfect case in point. Covering most of the thematic concerns that have occupied Angelopoulos in his forty years of filmmaking, it’s a deeply allusive meditation on myth, history and modernity, political ideology and national identity, and the demands made of its audience extend far beyond its 199 minute running time." Ancient Inuit legend has it that two brothers set out on a quest to save their community from an evil shaman, Amaqjiuaq and Atanarjuat. When the former is killed only Atanarjuat (the fast runner) is left to continue the journey and defy the darkness that has descended upon his people. Using local cast and crew and filmed entirely on the sea ice this is a beautifully epic tale; both stunning to look at and utterly enthralling. Highly recommended and intelligent escapism. find out more...

This classic piece of early silent cinema is noted not merely for its dramatic camerawork and cast of thousands but also for its contribution as a cinematic template, particularly in the genre of horror. A portmanteau of 7 short films linked by the common theme of sex. The first is quite bizarre, a series of Balkan myths about sex, some acted out, some in cartoon, real myths or performance art? The second is art based round the male genitalia and its primary function. The fourth, longest and, probably, the best is the Larry Clark one about a bunch of male teens who've answered an ad for a role in a porn flick. It's about them, their attitudes toward sex, their gropings with female porn stars and find out more...

Cross-dressing club-kid Eddie vies with a rival drag-queen for the favours of drug-dealing cabaret-manager Gonda in this unflinching and often brutal portrayal of Japanese gay subculture. Matsumoto achieves a line between pathos and hilarity that makes Funeral Parade of Roses utterly unique; a feverish collision of avant-garde aesthetics and grind-house shocks (not to mention a direct influence on Stanley Kubrick's A Clockwork Orange). In addition this psychedelic era film is a gay play on the O find out more...
