Ning Tsai-Shen, a humble travelling tax collector, arrives in a small town, but, the inns all being full, he ends up spending the night in the haunted Lan Ro temple. Jim Carrey dominates this latest version of the classic Dickens story in which an elderly Victorian miser is taken on a redemptive trip through his past, present and future. Using 'performance capture' animation this stylish film sticks closely to the book, though with added ghoulishness.

A respectable, sincere film of Robert Bolt's literate play, with Scofield as Sir Thomas More, endorsing the divine right of the Pope over and above his King, Henry VIII, who wishes to divorce Katherine Of Aragon and marry Anne Boleyn. Star-spangled, lavish looking reworking of Shakespeare's whimsical comedy, shunted forward to the 19th Century. Comfortably condensed into two hours, with lots of lurex and digital effects, some might say this is the literature-lite version, but it's refreshingly unpretentious, and the four leads are excellent as the quartet of bickering lovers, with Calista Flockhart being mischieviously cast as the whingingly desperate Hermia.
