One of Hollywood's saddest heartbreakers with the emotional Garland, fast approaching her final crack-up, superb as the fast rising young star leaving behind her true love, Mason in one of his greatest performances, on the slippery road to failure. The DVD version includes important excised footage, many scenes admirably filling gaps in the original, rediscovered in archives. find out more...

The life of comedienne Fannie Brice, from her early days in the Jewish slums of the Lower East Side, when only her mother believed Fanny could make it in show business, to her hilarious debut as a rollerskating chorus-girl and on to the height of her career as a star with the Ziegfeld Follies. Unfortunately she fell in love, and married, the wrong man; handsome, urbane but inept gambler Nick. Streisand won the best actress Oscar in this classic musical. find out more...

A blissful romance 'Umbrellas' makes escapist play with the stuff of kitchen-sink social realism and every line of dialogue is sung to Michel Legrand's melodious score. Essentially a story of true love lost, elevated by its magical simplicity.

Decker's setting of a remote farm feels like a metaphor for what turns out to be hell. The raw and emotional (and yes, sometimes funny) dialog tells a story that can seem familiar at points but really is meant to keep you guessing and off balance. I really enjoyed how the undertones of this film came to life through her very deft contrast of the find out more...

A lavish Hollywood remake of "The Gay Senorita", this 1942 musical (scored by Jerome Kern) marked the second and, unfortunately, last partnering of Fred Astaire and Rita Hayworth.
