A straight up ghost story meets the superficiality of the fashion industry in this haunting, eerie tale of a young woman trying to find 'a sign' from her dead twin brother whilst busying herself buying clothes for a stuck up supermodel. Beautifully captured by Assayas, wonderfully performed by Stewart and one that stays with you long after the credits roll. find out more...

TEETH (2007)

A genre defying little oddity from writer/director Mitchell Lichtenstein that follows the story of Dawn, the teenage spokesperson of a high school chastity league, whose burgeoning sexuality reveals a unique (and voracious!) anatomical anomaly. find out more...

An almost very good film, The Childhood of a Leader uses visual and aural craft to create tension that is electric. Unfortunately, the narrative payoff falls a little flat. That said, it uses fable to good effect and is worth seeing for visual style and the score alone. Good - almost great - stuff.& find out more...

'The Day Of The Locust' is a harrowing fable about delusion and false hope delving into the lives of those trying to achieve the glamorous lifestyle of pre-war Hollywood. The story revolves round an art director trying to get work, who falls for his young actress neighbour, her attempts to become a movie star and the men in her life. Donald Sutherland plays the estranged and deeply religious but now famously named Homer Simpson. find out more...
THE MIST (2007)

Following a violent thunderstorm, artist David Drayton and a small town community, all trapped in the local supermarket, come under vicious attack from creatures prowling in a thick and unnatural mist. Local rumours point to an army experiment gone awry at a nearby top-secret base, but as the locals break off into increasingly murderous factions the ravenous monsters are in danger of taking a back seat to the carnage. Mist is a superior adaptation of a Stephen King horror thanks in large part to find out more...

A group of backpacking friends discover an ancient temple in the jungles of Mexico, but their delight soon turns to terror when they're attacked by aggressive locals and then savaged by a blood thirsty, but quite pretty, vine (yup, as in a plant). As terrifying as realising you've fried the garlic before the onion while cooking a ‘spag bol' for your mates, but some fun might be had from its unrelenting awfulness. find out more...

A brilliant lo-fi thriller that centres entirely around Blake Lively's brilliant performance as Nancy, a surfer marooned by a shark. Plays well to fears of the natural world but also gives a guttural punch as we watch the survival instinct come to life in the fittest of our species. Tense, convincing and smart.

Teenager Anna returns to her family; sister, dad and wicked stepmother after time spent in a mental institution following their real mother's death. The two girls suspect the step-mother of involvement in mum's death, but what could easily have been a straight forward 'cuckoo-in-the-nest' thriller veers leftward into a world of dreams, hallucinations, fantasy and ghosts. find out more...

"Josephine Decker has created a new style of thriller that employs allegory, incorporates touches of David Lynch as well as Magritte -esque imagery. Decker's setting of a remote farm feels like a metaphor for what turns out to be hell. The raw and emotional (and yes, sometimes funny) dialog tells a story that can seem familiar at points but really is meant to keep you guessing and off balance. I really enjoyed how the undertones of this film came to life through her very deft contrast of the find out more...
