This fast-paced and beautifully constructed film debut by Mexican director Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu has won critical acclaim all over the world. Weaving the stories of the three victims of a brutal car crash which we witness in the first scene, the film takes you through three very separate worlds that all come together on Mexico's mean streets. From the world of a high-class supermodel to the depths of despair felt by an exiled ex-assassin, Amores Perros is a real achievement in filmmaking. find out more...

Stan is a quiet, solitary detective in New York City. A few years before, he solved a gruesome case of serial murders, although an undercover police officer lost her life. A new set of similar murders begin; the bodies are elaborately displayed and the killer uses equipment from art and early movie-making in the tableau or leaves a clue as to where the investigators are to stand to get the full artistic effect. 'Anamorph' is a dark, abstract thriller, although with its slightly American art hous find out more...

Continuing Catherine Breillat's exploration of gender politics and sexual mores, Anatomy of Hell takes a frank and unapologetic look at the desire/repulsion paradox of man's attitude to female genitalia and sexuality. In the toilets of a gay club a woman attempts to cut her wrists, a man enters, intervenes and finds himself on a four-day voyage of exploration of the female anatomy. As with Breillat's previous work expect graphic imagery and plenty of philosophising. find out more...
ANGEL (2007)

Superb apocalyptic tale of a young sax player, who witnesses a brutal, sectarian, terrorist bombing in a dancehall and becomes steadily more involved in trying to find the killers, pursuing them through the towns and countryside of Armagh. "Ostensibly a naturalistic thriller, but reaching beyond to hyper-realism and surrealism, Angel carries subtle echoes of Buñuel and early Scorsese films but remains uniquely true to its time and place - contemporary Ireland." find out more...

Let's be honest, you either love or hate cinema's infamous enfant terrible, Lars von Trier. Those of you who love him you will find ‘Antichrist' his most entertaining and beautifully orchestrated work to date. Layered, witty and wryly tongue-in-cheek at every turn, ‘Antichrist' is brutal, honest and intelligent in both its observation of human emotion and in its exploration of a life riddled with love, loss and psychosis. Those of you who hate him however (and for newcomers who aren't familiar w find out more...

In the immediate aftermath of her break up from Maxine, Persian, Bisexual Shirin refuses to accept their relationship is irrecoverable and sets about trying to win her back, with varying degrees of failure, whilst navigating the sociopolitical landscape that her life inhabits. Superbly written and directed by Desiree Akhavan - who also plays Shirin, well, superbly. So, all round superb, in my best Brooklyn accent. (Brett Atkinson)

BABEL (2006)

Four interlocking stories run in parallel; two set in Morocco, one in Mexico and one in Japan and all four follow different cinematic traditions that can be described as coming from World Cinema, American melodrama, American thriller and Asian New Wave. The accidental shooting of an American tourist is the trigger that begins a chain of misery that slowly envelopes four seemingly disparate groups of people from different social, cultural and geographic backgrounds. Borrowing, at a distance, from find out more...

Franz and Arthur team up with an innocent young girl, Odile, and decide to plan a heist, but as the trio cruise the bars and cafes of Paris hatching the perfect crime it becomes apparent, in their less than professional approach, that everything may not go as smoothly as at first hoped. The Outsiders is a tongue-in-cheek homage to early American pulp crime flicks, fast paced and free spirited, Godard's film retains much of its freshness and excitement. find out more...

A stunning visual account of man's struggle for survival in the 21st Century, a time when replicant life forms are beginning to surpass humans not just in intelligence but emotions, raising questions about our concepts of self. A post-modern sci-fi classic, THE great Hollywood movie of the '80s, the last great pre-computer film done with smoke-and-mirrors SFX and the definitive cult arthouse Sci-Fi film. This is the second version re-edited by Ridley Scott; all the good bits remain, with the onl find out more...
