The family gather to recall their domineering father through a brilliantly realised almost episodic series of reminiscences cleverly undercut with period music. Ambitious, elegant and profoundly moving, highly rated by critics and won FIPRESCI, the International Federation of Film Critics Prize, Cannes 1988.

Typically Roegian examination of the price we pay to get what we want; Hackman plays a prospector who strikes it rich in the 20s and then hangs around in his Bahamas pad wondering what the rest of his life can hold. It turns out that this is his bored, alcoholic wife, his headstrong daughter, her money grubbing hubby and a bunch of gangsters who want his island. Slightly smoother than the usual nervy Roeg style, but bold, stylish and gratifyingly enigmatic. Cosmic.

Utterly compelling true story of a young Jewish boy who avoids capture by the Nazis in 1939 by pretending to be Aryan. By a series of almost unbelievable events he ends up in the Hitler Youth academy where he is taught how to recognise and kill a Jew. Beautifully filmed and incredibly moving.

While travelling to visit their grandfather two children are told, through three beautifully observed vignettes, of a family curse that has lasted two hundred years. During the Napoleonic Wars a French soldier and a Benedetti fall in love leading to mutual tragedy, but great wealth for the family. 1903; a powerful politician separates his sister from her lover, leading to tragedy. A WW2 resistance effort goes wrong.......tragedy.

Told partially in flashback we learn of a married Japanese man, Kengo, who is sent to manage forests in Indochina, during WW2. Here he meets a young typist, Yukiko, who falls hopelessly in love with him. Despite his promises when he returns to Tokyo it is to his wife that does so and he continues having heartless affairs, while Yukiko is forced to become the mistress of a GI and then a rich businessman, anything to survive.

Edmund is a young Berliner, attempting to survive and make some sense of a world set in the remnants of a post-WWII Germany. Their are few voices that exude assured confidence in Edmund's life but his Nazi teacher is one such man and the consequences of his impassioned doctrine on the impressionable lad have horrific and tragic consequences.
