BIRDY (1985)

Certification15 Our Rating

Two soldiers return from Vietnam, one mentally scarred, the other physically. We flashback to their childhood and the fascination the slightly crazy one has with flying. So maybe after the horror of war it's a more logical decision to be a bird! A brilliant film about disillusionment, growing up and existential madness. find out more...

Ron Kovic was a green young patriot scarred, both mentally and physically, by the war in 'Nam. On his return he finds himself and his fellow paraplegics an unwanted embarrassment and after wasting himself in Mexico he emerges as a voice for the disaffected. Another powerful film from Oliver Stone. find out more...
CATCH-22 (1970)

Certification15 Our Rating

Adapted from the classic, absurdist, anti-war novel by Joseph Heller. "Catch-22" is the story of Yossarian, a pilot who trys to opt out of flying bombing missions by being declared insane, the catch being that anyone trying to avoid bombing missions by being insane must be sane. This dark classic catches much of the flavour of the book, the insanity, the corruption and the absurdity of war. Think MASH, but non-linear - flawed but awesome. find out more...

In a not far off dystopian future women have become infertile and governments have forgotten that Orwell's ‘1984' was supposed to be a searing indictment of what NOT to do. Finding a reluctant but increasingly determined guardian in the form of Theo, mother and child go in sea find out more...

A rather over-sentimentalised romantic drama about the wife of a war-hero who falls in love with a paraplegic 'Nam vet. The drama is underplayed, and cliched in places, and Jane Fonda, despite a sterling attempt, comes across as just a bit too saintly. The ending adds credibilty though. find out more...

A flight surgeon and a navy pilot overcome personal differences to work on solving the problem of dive bombers blacking out and dying. Another adrenalin fuelled collaboration between Flynn and Curtiz, based on a true story, but more interested in the suicidal/heroic white knuckle world in which so many early experimental pilots seemed to live. find out more...

August 1944. German flying bombs are raining down on London and directly under their flight path is a small cottage hospital. Inside the tension is almost unbearable for the dedicated team of surgeons and nurses, and not just because of the 'doodlebugs' and near misses, the close-knit community is torn apart by jealousy, emotional turmoil, the horrors of war and terrible secrets. When the local postman is brought in, delirious but trying to impart an urgent message, the murders begin. The eccent find out more...

Four American soldiers are sent on one last mission in which their convoy is ambushed sustaining casualties. We follow the psychologically traumatised quartet through their unhappy return to their families and friends, group therapy and coping with their memories. "Home of the Brave" is a well meaning, if occasionally slightly clunky, drama that attempts to show the sense of rage, loss, disillusionment and disassociation that affects many who return from the battlefield. find out more...
