Two disturbing but insightful documentaries of Aileen Wuornos, infamous as America's first female serial killer. The first of Broomfield's films deals with Wuornos while on death row awaiting her execution and paints a sympathetic picture of an undeniably damaged human being. The second film looks into the torturous childhood that created the ‘Monster', and together the two documentaries raise some worrying questions about the validity of the American legal system and its close association with

AN INCONVENIENT TRUTH (2007)
Certification15 Our Rating
Al Gore finds life after the politically crushing embarrassment that was his tenure as vice president and, frankly, it's unlikely he will experience another point as high as his achievement in this profound, engaging and, mercifully, clear documentary on the consequences of our complacent greed. That ‘An Inconvenient Truth' provides little in the way of true revelations pertaining to the earth's (humanity's) looming ecological demise, and ignores some of the more profound problems of trapped car

ROGER AND ME (1990)
Certification15 Our Rating
A highly personalised documentary account of one filmmaker's frustrated attempts to interview the Chairman of General Motors when he closed down 35,000 jobs in his hometown. Instead he focuses on the drastic and wry effects on the town. The result is incisive, witty, and (surprisingly) very, very funny. A Must!

SPELLBOUND (2003)
CertificationU Our Rating
On one level it's terrifying, another tragic, but there's no denying it's utterly hypnotic. A hall seething with demonic young children obsessed with the national spelling Bee competition, a cruel concept made all the more vicious by parental participation. Spellbound is a dazzling documentary, sad, funny, and like any particularly fine true story....almost unbelievable.

THE LARAMIE PROJECT (2003)

After the attack, a theatre troupe headed to Laramie to work on a play based on the real-life reactions of the townspeople and those involved. The film is a re-e

THIS FILM IS NOT YET RATED (2006)
Certification18 Our Rating
Long the bane of American filmmakers the Motion Picture Association of America, the body that rates film content, is the target of this spot-on investigative documentary. The big questions raised are: 1) WHO are the anonymous 'raters', the so-called arbitors of American morality, and 2) why is there a distinct difference between how studio films are censored and how indie flicks are? Through interviews with indie directors such as John Waters, Kimberly Pierce, Atom Egoyan and Kevin Smith, we get

TOUCHING THE VOID (2003)

Joe Simpson and Simon Yates were two mates who shared the same passion, unassisted extreme climbing, and on the west face of Siula Grande, Peru, they found the ultimate test for their skill and endurance. The ascent was not without incident but it was the return to base camp that went horribly wrong, leaving one of the men facing a seemingly impossible journey to salvation. Touching the Void, a mixture of top class dramatic reconstruction and talking head documentary, is based on Joe Simpson's b

WHO KILLED THE ELECTRIC CAR? (2006)
CertificationPG Our Rating
General Motors EV-1 electric car was a revelation, a non-fossil fuel form of transport that offered a genuine alternative to the gasoline guzzlers that choke America's roads. So why were they all sent to the knackers' yard? 'Who Killed The Electric Car?' is a fascinating, sad and scarily predictable tale of the oil industry's determination to keep profits up regardless of the short and long term global consequences.
