Michelle breaks up with her boyfriend and, in a panicked drive interstate, ends up unconcious in her vehicle by the side of the road. Grunting and behaving like apes, a suburban family's peace and equilibrium is interrupted by the appearance of a second alpha male. Throwing satire, cake, faecal matter and other such crap at one another, the actors are clearly having a swell time sending up the absurdity of society and family values. Though the first twenty minutes offer a rollicking good time the premise, and its 'sub'text, soon wears thin. Directorial debut from Steve Oram who you're more likely t find out more...
In the immediate aftermath of her break up from Maxine, Persian, Bisexual Shirin refuses to accept their relationship is irrecoverable and sets about trying to win her back, with varying degrees of failure, whilst navigating the sociopolitical landscape that her life inhabits. Superbly written and directed by Desiree Akhavan - who also plays Shirin, well, superbly. So, all round superb, in my best Brooklyn accent. (Brett Atkinson)
