The second of the terrific Stewart/Mann Westerns is characteristic of their pairings: adult themes played out against prairie vistas in which betrayal and violence can erupt at any time. Formerly a vicious Missouri raider, Stewart now leads an Oregon bound wagon train that, having brushed aside ineffective Native American resistance to the invasion, becomes embroiled in a conflict over resources between farmers (decent folk) and miners (womanising, drinking, thieving, scumbags). Nothing more can be said about this classic melodrama from the peak of the Hollywood studio-film era. Hardened cynic Bogart softens when he meets old flame Bergman who is now a refugee in neutral wartime Casablanca. Together they outwit the Germans... and of course there's that famous song. Watch this classic or some day you'll regret it. Maybe not today, maybe not tomorrow...

DODGE CITY (1939)

Michael Curtiz's epic Western 'Dodge City' stars Errol Flynn as Wade Hatton, a wagon master turned sheriff who tames the cow town at the end of the railroad. Flynn brings his trademark swash buckling charisma to the role of the justice-seeking sheriff, and Olivia de Havilland is both tough and lovely as Hatton's ally and inevitable love interest. The film also features one of the liveliest bar room brawls in cinematic history.

GREASE (1978)

A high school musical which ripped off everything it could from the 1950s. At the time it was slated, but, in retrospect, it started a trend and is nowhere near as bad as some of the movies which followed it. In fact, one could go as far as to say it's now a bit of a classic...

GREAT EXPECTATIONS (1946)

David Lean's much-acclaimed production of the gloomy Dickens classic. Briefly, a young boy befriends an escaped convict who later repays him anonymously, creating a bond which the now upwardly-mobile youngster could well do without...an interesting probe of Victorian class structure. Visually flawless, perfectly paced, it's a masterpiece.

Howard Hughes' first movie, and what an epic money sucker it was too. Three friends, two English and one German, are conscripted into WWI as fighter pilots and must make the choice between their patriotic duty and their loyalty to one another. Some amazing aerial scenes and Jean Harlow's first starring role are amongst the highlights.

JOURNEY TO THE CENTER OF THE EARTH (1959)
CertificationU Our Rating
Based on Jules Verne's fantasy adventure we follow Professor Lindenbrook and his motley posse into the bowls of the earth where they discover a land that time forgot (or something very similar). Very bad baddies, huge ravenous lizards, and giant mushrooms are just a taster of the goodies on offer. There's also a bit of effective sexual symbolism, in typical Hollywood style, which greatly enhances the syrupy romantic subplot. Excellent and with the added bonus of the late, great James Mason.

KISS ME STUPID (1964)

Dean Martin pretty much plays himself as a boozing, womanising crooner in this rather saucy comedy farce. Famous singer ‘Dino' finds himself trapped in Nevada by two ambitious songwriters and at the mercy of his own insatiable appetites. Set to an Andre Previn score Kiss Me Stupid is an enjoyable and for its time, risqué romantic comedy.
