A wonderfully adapted film based round the exploits of Cicero, aka Elyesa Bazna, the Albanian born valet (Mason at his best) of the British ambassador to Turkey, who sold secrets to the Germans during 1944. The valet's gentlemanly pretensions are put to the test in this tale of espionage and romantic intrigue. Ace.

Part 1 of Wajda's trilogy of wartime films, the hopeful one, is set in Wola, a working-class area of Warsaw in 1942, and deals with the graduation of a bunch of semi-delinquent street kids, through individual acts of defiance and courage, into a youth resistance group. The heroism is not simple, neither loyalties nor self-sacrifice are assured, but united they will be.

A well known WW2 classic; the story of a group of women POWs forced to trek across the Malay jungle by their Japanese captors, none of whom see the care of women as within their duties, and the women's friendship with a gritty Aussie who regales them with tales of his home town, Alice Springs.

The last of Wajda's famous trilogy, the one that signifies despair, has Cybulski, the 'Polish James Dean', as a young fighter no longer killing Germans but instructed to assassinate a recently appointed communist official. His deepening love affair with a hotel barmaid has him starting to question the value of his struggle. Superb.

In the middle of the Second World War teenage Alyosha is commended for destroying two German tanks, but, rather than take a medal, he requests a four day pass to visit his mother. Ballad of a Soldier is about this journey and the life enhancing encounters therein. Nominated at the 1962 Academy Awards for Best Screenplay, this classic of post-war Soviet Realism won many international film awards on its release, most notably a BAFTA Award for Best Film.

In the winter of 1944 the Allies prepared to invade Germany but to the surprise of everybody (bar the Enigma code-breaking team) Hitler not only managed a counter-attack in the Ardennes, but a remarkably successful one. The film shows the conflict from the perspectives of an American intelligence officer and a German Panzer Commander.

Adapted from the classic, absurdist, anti-war novel by Joseph Heller. "Catch-22" is the story of Yossarian, a pilot who trys to opt out of flying bombing missions by being declared insane, the catch being that anyone trying to avoid bombing missions by being insane must be sane. This dark classic catches much of the flavour of the book, the insanity, the corruption and the absurdity of war. Think MASH, but non-linear - flawed but awesome.

During the German Occupation a young trainee railway guard at a remote country station desperately tries to lose his virginity. He finally succeeds with the station master's wife. Satiric, anti-heroic, humorous and balanced tragi-comedy. Generally considered the finest Czech new wave film.
