Superb biopic of legendary country singer Loretta Lynn. Sissy Spacek, who incidentally has a belting voice, deservedly won the Best Actress Oscar for her moving portrayal of the naive Kentucky farm girl who became a singing superstar against all the odds, while Tommy Lee Jones is dynamite as her husband Doolittle. A rather over-sentimentalised romantic drama about the wife of a war-hero who falls in love with a paraplegic 'Nam vet. The drama is underplayed, and cliched in places, and Jane Fonda, despite a sterling attempt, comes across as just a bit too saintly. The ending adds credibilty though.

Powerful drama, based on a true story. Sarandon is superb as the nun whose work counselling Death Row killers brings her uncomfortably close to cold-hearted double murderer Matthew Poncelot (Penn), a man who shows no fear or remorse. Stirring stuff which avoids the usual Hollywood cliches.

An excellent black comedy, handsome thriller and a tall story that keeps you guessing as it unwinds. The genuinely ridiculous plot (a man pays a couple of goons to 'pretend' to kidnap his wife in order to get his paws on his in-laws' 'ransom' money) is completely credible as mighty plans fall apart, spiralling ever more beyond the protagonist's control and leaving us marvelling at the complex stupidity of human nature. A modern classic.

The life of comedienne Fannie Brice, from her early days in the Jewish slums of the Lower East Side, when only her mother believed Fanny could make it in show business, to her hilarious debut as a rollerskating chorus-girl and on to the height of her career as a star with the Ziegfeld Follies. Unfortunately she fell in love, and married, the wrong man; handsome, urbane but inept gambler Nick. Streisand won the best actress Oscar in this classic musical.
