Lacombe is a young French peasant who wants to join the resistance but is considered too young, so instead he joins the Gestapo! He enjoys his power but soon falls in love with a Jewish girl. This can be seen as Malle's answer to the question who colloborates? The film maps the mechanics of compromise with precision and without histronics. Another superb film from the great French director.

The best "buddy" movie ever made. Voight plays the naive rhinestone studded small-town boy who dreams of becoming a big-city gigolo, Hoffman is the frail, sickly hobo he takes under his wing. Stunning performances from both make this an outstandingly powerful and touching film. Very stylish. Won Best Picture at 1969 Academy Awards.

A man deformed by a rare illness is taken up and patronised by fashionable London society - another freak show for the elephant man to be exhibited in. David Lynch's highly individual style here perfectly complements the film's material. A dark and brooding, yet sympathetic and sentimental film.
