Seriously insightful, if saucy, romantic comedy from director Kevin Smith, the genius behind Clerks and Mallrats. This knowing teen flick brings Hawthorn'e The Scarlet Letter to the Facebook generation. Stanley Tucci and Patricia Clarkson relish their roles as Californian-to-the-max parents while the man candy is provided by Gossip Girl's Penn Badgley. At times the film tries too hard to be audacious and falls flat, at others it shows flashes of brilliant comedy. A mixed bag of good intentions.
