Wildly unusual costume tale of a Kabuki female impersonator who avenges his parents' suicides by courting (in female guise) their tormentors. His elaborate revenge is superbly choreographed by director Ichikawa, and the central performance of Hasegawa (in TWO roles!) is beyond remarkable.

Babette is a refugee from Paris who flees to a small ultrapuritan Danish community to work as a cook. Their only diet is one of ale-bread and fish soup, so when she offers to prepare a feast they are determined not to enjoy it. Oscar winning film whose style changes to fit the mood of the plot.

Charu lives a lonely and idle life in 1870s India. Although her husband devotes more time to his newspaper than to their marriage, he sees her loneliness and asks his brother-in-law, Umapeda, a would-be writer, to keep her company. At this point Bhupati's cousin, Amal, visits and spends a long vacation and, after several months, Charu and Amal's feelings for each other move beyond friendship and toward tragedy. Fantastical and original movie set in 19th Century frontier country. Blake (Depp) becomes a wanted man and takes to the hills where he meets "Nobody", an Indian who thinks Depp is the English poet. Both comic and thought-provoking with wonderful visual landscapes and sound music, from cult director Jim Jarmusch.

A highly acclaimed costume drama that proves slightly different from Rohmer's more contemporary work. Typical of French films set in the 19th Century it is an examination of the moral corruption and hypocrisy that formulated the mores of the time. Rohmer's direction adds sparkle as always.
